Meet the Crew

Sam, Ben and Mark — the SBM Offshore Adventures crew, restoring a 1981 CS 33 named Persistence on Lake Ontario

We are not a company. We are three friends who pooled $18,500 CAD in November 2025 to buy a tired 1981 CS 33, hull number 127.

The name SBM Offshore Adventures stuck because our initials are Sam, Ben, and Mark, and we liked the absurdity of sounding like an oil company. While we are turning wrenches in Port Credit, our buddy Gary Virk manages our website, logistics, and parts sourcing from Brampton.

Sam

Captain by virtue of being the one who found the listing on Kijiji at 11:30 on a Tuesday night. Coastal cruising certified. Strong opinions about anchor chain and mast step corrosion. Will argue about bottom paint for forty minutes.

Ben

Reads charts with genuine enthusiasm and a degree of confidence that occasionally alarms the other two. Handles rigging, sail inventory, and most decisions involving rope. Once reseated a keel bolt at 2 a.m. and won't let us forget it.

Mark

Electrical systems, engine diagnostics, and anything involving a multimeter. Once fixed a lawnmower. We consider this adequate qualification. Also responsible for the boat's name being painted in a font that is, generously, "nautical."

Gary Virk (Webmaster & Logistics)

Gary Virk is not on the boat. Gary Virk is in Brampton. Gary Virk sources parts, manages this website, tracks shipping on marine hardware orders, and answers emails when the rest of us are elbow-deep in the bilge. If you have reached this page through a search engine, Gary Virk is probably why.
